Objectives : The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of stress and related factors on life satisfaction among groups of university students.
Methods : A total of 2,338 (1,267 male and 1,071 female) university students were randomly selected to participate in a survey. Demographic data, life satisfaction, stress, health behavior including depression, alcohol, sleep, smoking and eating were collected using self-reported questionnaires.
Results : Students with high satisfaction were on average more likely to be male, nonsmoker, believer and low grades; not have sleep disturbance; have higher economic status, standard body weight and normal eating attitude; less likely to be depressed than those without high satisfaction. Life satisfaction scores were negatively correlated with total stress scores. We also found that from the list of potential confounders, depressive symptoms, BMI, nicotine dependence, total stress scores were associated with life satisfaction in a stepwise multiple regression analysis.
Conclusion : Our study address that life satisfaction of university students are significantly correlated with the various demographic and clinical factors. These findings suggest that early detection of stress and related factors; and intensive mental health promotion program need to improve life satisfaction in university students.
